If you’ve been refused PIP or disagree with your award, the first step is to ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration. This is when the DWP reviews your claim again before you can go to a tribunal.

🗓️ How Long Do You Have to Ask?

You must ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration within 1 month from the date on your PIP decision letter. If you're late, you may still be able to ask — but you’ll need a good reason.

📞 How to Request It

You can ask for a reconsideration by:

📝 What to Include in Your Request

Be clear about why you think the decision is wrong. Point out:

  • Activities where you should’ve scored more points
  • Important details that may have been missed
  • Any new evidence you want to add

📬 What Happens Next?

A different DWP staff member will look at your case and any new evidence. You'll get a Mandatory Reconsideration Notice by post. If the decision still doesn’t change, you can then appeal to a tribunal.

📄 Keep a Copy

Always keep a copy of your reconsideration request and proof of posting or submission. You may need this if you go on to appeal.
