If your PIP claim has been refused or awarded at a lower rate than you expected, you have the right to challenge the decision. Here's how the appeal process works — and how to give yourself the best chance of success.

📩 Step 1: Request a Mandatory Reconsideration

This is the first stage of challenging a decision. You must ask the DWP to look at your case again. You can do this:

You must do this within 1 month of the date on your decision letter.

📝 What to Include

Explain clearly why you disagree with the decision. Refer to specific activities and points if you can. You can also send in extra supporting evidence.

📬 Step 2: Wait for a New Decision

The DWP will review your case and send you a letter with the outcome. If they don’t change the decision, you can move on to an appeal.

⚖️ Step 3: Submit Your Appeal

You can appeal to an independent tribunal. You’ll need to complete the online form or send in an appeal form (SSCS1). You must include your Mandatory Reconsideration Notice.

🎙️ Step 4: Attend Your Tribunal

You’ll be invited to a hearing — usually by phone, video, or in person. A judge and a medical or disability expert will ask you questions. You can bring someone with you or send written evidence.

📢 Step 5: Get a Decision

The tribunal will usually make a decision the same day or send it by post. If successful, your award will be backdated. If unsuccessful, you can only appeal further on a point of law.
